The Grapes, a Courage pub at 121 Borough High St, since at least 1842, is still in business but has changed its name to St Christopher’s Inn, reflecting the name of an earlier inn on the site. The alley at right from which a car is emerging is Kentish Buildings, formally Christopher Alley.

The little side turning, left of the monument is still named as Borough High Street. In c1800 it was called Counter lane and on the left, just past the building with the green sign, was an alley called Boars Head Inn. I think that is probable where Boars Head Court was?, also there was a Boar’s Head Courtyard.

The railway line passing over the busy road junction of Railway Approach (right) and Borough High Street close to London Bridge Station with Southwark Cathedral visible behind. Behind the bus is the café I used when I worked in Railway Approach in the late 1950s.
