Like today’s inner-city children, there was nowhere for town & city children to play except in the streets, although cars were few, there were dangers from abandoned, unsafe houses, bomb sites, horse-drawn carts, trams & lorries. It was normal for neighbours & passing policemen to reprimand any child caught misbehaving & report them to their parents, which tended to keep most children on the straight & narrow.
