Deptford Wharf

Postby fosney » Wed Jan 18, 2017 4:17 pm

With all the developments that are going on in the area, I thought it was time to look aoround at the fringes of the Borough and in particular Deptford Wharf just over the border from Rotherhithe. I sometimes wonder if the people who have paid some 500K for a property in the area realise what went on in the area some 100 years ago and beyond, these areas are deep in history.
But let us start round about 1840 with the construction of the Branchline from New Cross to Deptford Wharf what was done at the wharf and pictures of how it used to be.

If you have any knowledge of the area please have a say!

Picture from the 1960s looking down Grove Street, in the foreground we have the entrance to Deptford
Wharf with the goods trains passing over the level crossing and next to this the entrance to the Royal
Victoria Victualling Yard and in the distance at the far end of Grove Street The Foreign Cattle Market.
This picture was taken before the building of the Pepys Estate had started.
Further in the distance and out of sight was Convoys Wharf this being the site of Deptford
Dockyard which goes back to the time of Henry VIII.

A complete differance to what we have today but thats progress

large advertisement for the timber firm, Smith & Olley of Bridge Wharf, painted across the brickwork of a bridge in Bermondsey c1954. I think this is stretching it a bit for Bermondsey, more Deptford.?
