Tram coming from New Kent Road. Being on a bend the arms on the top of the tram came off quite a lot here.I can remember in the 1940s/50s standing here watching them putting the arms back with a long pole.
OLD KENT ROAD.
Re: OLD KENT ROAD.
The Kentish Drovers. There is only one other pub in London with this name – a modern pub in Peckham, standing on the site of an earlier pub with the same name. The name of both pubs is a reminder of the days when cattle had to be driven on main roads often leading to London. Drovers were a hardy breed of men who took the cattle from farms many miles from London – in this case from Kent – to the cattle markets in London, principally Smithfield Market on the west side of the City of London.
As they neared London, the drovers would rest the live-stock and let them graze for several days, sometimes weeks, to fatten them up after a long slow journey when most of the animals would have lost considerable weight and therefore lost some of their market value. The drovers knew of fields where the animals could rest and be fattened up before being sold at market. A short distance from the pub is a side street known as Drovers Place which originally had been fields, hired out to passing drovers to allow their animals to graze.
The pub is under the care of English Heritage who seem to do little to look after the building. The very beautiful mural above the pub is just falling apart when it should be look after before it is lost forever.

I think this shop was on the opposite side to the Dun Cow Pub,between Madron Street and Surrey Square. If you enlarge the picture on page 12 of the original Dun Cow, it looks like the same markings on the top of the shops on the left, as in this picture?.

Re: OLD KENT ROAD.
I took up organized boxing when I was six. Around the age of 13 I joined the Fitzroy Lodge club on Lambeth Road and boxed until I was 20 when I emigrated to Canada. Won a couple of ABA titles back then. I would also sometimes train at the Thomas a'Becket club\pub because some of my friends trained there and it was great to meet some of the famous professional boxers that either worked out there or were in town for a bout. Henry Cooper and his twin brother George always offered tips and smart ass comments. George was taller than Henry and I sparred with him a couple times.
The infamous Kray twins were boxing enthusiasts having boxed a little them selves. They were often at the Becket and seemed to be on terms with Henry and George. I chatted with the Krays a couple of times but was well aware of who and what they were
The Krays were once on the card at the Royal Albert Hall. Given their reputation I would not have wanted to face them. Imagine winning and wondering if that would be the end of it.
Re: OLD KENT ROAD.
Nice picture of Henry, shame about the Krays, knowing them and Henry personally Henry would cringe at seeing this picture, the less we see of the Krays the better, plus they are not from South London. I see on the poster Lew Lazar was fighting Charlie Kray, Lew was a good fighter,in fact he knocked Kray out in that fight, who said good?. I met Lew well after his fighting days as I knew some of his family from Stepney, the family name was Lazares and one of them played football for Leyton Orient & QPR.
