The Mason’s had a less glamorous part in local history, as the first pub in the area to have strippers perform on stage in the mid-1970s.

The Bell was situated at 51 East Street. This pub closed in 2013 and has now been converted into shops. Previously known as The Royal Albert which can just be seen under that name on page 1 second post.

East Street Market.The older generation will recall how A1 had a record stall at East Street Market every Saturday. I bought my first record here,I think it was The Goons “I’m Walking Backwards For Christmas”. 1950s. My taste in music as improved

East Street Market on the corner of Blackwood Street right. There has been street trading since the 16th century, with the market officially running since 1880.The East Street Baptist Church can be seen on the left. East Street and the market was used in the title sequence of the TV show Only Fools and Horse.
