Grasmere, Lake District - WWII evacuees

Postby TeddyP » Thu Apr 01, 2021 1:31 pm

My mother (Margaret Stammers) was born in Bermondsey in 1941 and lived in Anchor Street with her parents (William Stammers and Jessie Kipps). Just recently my mother was recalling when she was evacuated during WWII from Bermondsey to Grasmere in the Lake District. She evacuated with her brothers William and Eric in about 1944.

I wondered whether any of you have any memories or further information on Grasmere and the evacuation process.

(BTW, I noticed that there is a Grasmere Point tower block in the Old Kent Road, next to Windermere Point and Ambelside Point - both also evacuation points in the Lake District).

TIA
Steve
