Is Christ Church the one knocked down in the late Seventies? I think it was further down on the corner with Cathay Street.

Hi deegs
Funny you should mention the Christ Church in Rotherhithe as I've been searching for info on the Christ Church in Jamaica Road!
I've been trying to work out the exact location of Christ Church and with the help of some old and new maps I've worked out that it stood on the half of Parkers Row that has become part of the 'new' Jamaica Road.
Does anyone else remember Christ Church in Parkers Row and does anyone have any pics or photo's as I can't find any pics or photo's of it on the internet.????

The church stood on the corner of what is now old jamaica rd, abbey st and parker row. Where the tower block now stands.

Union Road and Christ Church
Looking at the 1916 map it looks as though Union Road started at either Cathay Street or West lane -Southwark Park Road ( perhaps someone can confirm this ). Christ Church Union Road is marked on the map at the corner of Cathay Street and Union Road

Christs Church---- Parkers Row
Thanks for the picture by croby34 which answers scotty question about Christs Church Parkers Row. If you zoom in on the picture you are given a clear picture of Christ Church ( middle of picture left side )
Consructed in 1848 in the Ramanesque Style and closed in 1956 was demolished in 1966 and it seems there are no photos of the building unless someone has one?
Note also in centre right of picture the Peabody Buiding from earlier picture and the Rope Factory Site with some sort of factory still there.

Thanks for the info on Christ Church everyone!
The reason I am so intrigued by the church is because as a child I used to go to the C.U.M. club (Cambridge University Mission) in old Jamaica Road and I remember vividly a couple of occasions where the club leaders took us to the derelict Christ Church to play netball in the main hall of the church and it used to give me the creeps!

Hi bermondseygal
Thanks for reply,
Yes you are right it was under the flats, two shops were there,I believe he used bake there or at his home lovely rock cakes with apple in them they were delicious.
But he was a character though, nice to know some one else remembers him.

Jamaica Road Junction with Wilson Grove
Another picture from the 1950s with Wilson Grove on our left Drummond Road to the right with Southwark Park Road further down to the right.
The boy on the bike reminds us how things have changed in that parents could allow their offspring the freedom to explore. The area looks ready for change with urban decay.
I was intrigued by the shop on the left of the picture "Defiance" and wonder what it used to be, I thought a Radio shop perhaps but how wrong can one be in fact it was a Tailors Shop seen from the second picture.
Can anyone remember this area as it was and the shops that were there
