SUMNER STREET

Postby kiwi » Tue Jan 09, 2018 3:51 am

Wagstaff Buildings, Sumner Street, Bankside, c. 1920. I think this is a misprint and it should be Sumner Street. Wagstaff Buildings, was opposite Park Street and the Blue Pump pub was on the corner off Sumner Street and Great Guildford Street.

A 1931 view from the south showing the weatherboarded houses known as Wagstaff Buildings, off the south side of Sumner Street, with a young girl standing in the street and Miss Kate Francis in the doorway of number 4

Sumner Buildings were built on the site in the front of the picture.(1930s). The land that Sumner Buildings sits on was previously used by one of the largest businesses in London at the beginning of the 19th Century, Pott’s Vinegar. The building in front I think was the Grammar School and the empty space right St Peters Church.

Sumner Street, Southwark, from Southwark Street, c1978. A Printing Works factory at 17 Sumner Street can be seen on the bend of the road. This building no longer exists. Neo Bankside, luxury apartment blocks, now occupy this site.
