Ayres Street was changed from Whitecross Street in tribute to Alice Ayres. (aged 25, 1859-1885). A very brave lady.

Ayres Street, White Cross Cottages, Southwark. Completed 1890. Not sure if this is the back or front of these Cottages.?
The reason being is, this side is called White Cross Cottages, the other side in Red Cross Way Topic are called Red Cross Cottages. Could be they are back to back houses.?
