Southwark Park Road

Another advert from the 1930s Uden Undertakers shop which was between Bennetts Confectionery shop and Thurstons Furniture shop in Southwark Park Road, it still has fascinating memories for me from the years after the war when as kids on the way to Southwark Park we would stand for ages outside the shop and watch the skills of the carpenters making the coffins in the front window of the shop.

Hi Fosney, The two shops opposite Southwark Park School was as you say Mrs Watsons sweet shop & Len Littlewoods barbers shop. Watsons sweet shop made their own ice lollies from frozen cordial in egg cups , the period being during the war till about 1950. Regards Jim Roll.

hi Fosney
I used to live in Yalding road which is just along from the shops. I well remember the Co-op and my mother collecting her "checks". I very often had the job of counting the "silver" checks to make them up into pounds and then going to the Co-op to change them for little Golden one pound tokens. I lived in Yalding road from 1941 until I married in 1959 and moved.

Adjacent to the Co-op was a Barber shop where I had my hair done every week.

Hi
Joe, I remember that pub well, I use to sell cockles winkles etc outside on the pavement
on saturday morning. It was my pocket money, which then took up to the Rialto pictures and also bought me packet of hot salt peanuts in Walworths which I took in, does any one else remember ??

I used to live at 103 Southwark Park Road from 1962 to 1969, it was between Yalding Rd and Lucey Rd opposite Welch House, the old people's home. We had to move out to make way for the Lucey Way development, we moved to St Vincent House in April '69 and my mum still lives there. My nan was in Welch Hse and remember crossing Southwark Park Rd to visit her, the film evidence still exists.

Southwark Park Road

Picture of the then new Market in Southwark Park Road (The Blue) after the stalls had been removed from the road.
The part of Camilla Road that joined Blue Anchor Lane has gone in the redevelopment as has the end of Camilla Road from which the picture was taken.

Southwark Park Road

Looking across to Anchor Street, apart from the shops tennants the old buildings seem to be the same and this could well be the only part of the Blue the remains intact building wise. Note Boots the Chemist Shop before it moved across the road

Market Place 'The Blue'

The photo of Market Place was taken around 1975/6 when local council, again stuck there noses into something they didn't really understand and moved all the stalls from along Southwark Park Road into Market Place. And sadly as you can see from the photo that not many stalls actually made the move.
