I know it doesn't look likely, but I actually took this photo of Gosnell's in March 1969!

HI Joe
The Pawnshop on the corner of the entrance road to Atkinsons was called
Wintergreen I thought it was comical because to be called green back in the thirties
was accepted was being a little less than streetwise and being added to my name
how could people trust a Pawnbroker with a name like that..I went past that shop
4 times a day to go to the Old Alma School thro the iron entrance doors in S P Rd.
I know that this is history now but the memories can be passed down.Mind you
they had 3 beautiful golden balls hanging up outside the shop. The sign of the
Pawnbroker. Everybody Be lucky.

Hi, does anyone know how long this garage was a Ford Dealers? I would like to find out if it was a Ford Dealer in the 1970's.

Hi,
Don't know if you picked up the previous comment but I took this picture in March 1969 and to my memory, Gosnells remained a Ford dealer for a few years (but not much more!).
Regards

The Palace Cinema - Southwark Park Road-Corner of Ambrose Street.
Destroyed by Bombs 1940
The Palace. That brings back great memories of the Sat Morning Mickey Mouse Club.I saw it the night after it was destroyed by a Direct hit,the roof was in Ambrose Street.Sad really as i never knew what happened to Buck Jones, they had Hopalong Cassidy at the rialto..The Marble Steps stayed there until well after the war.The site was used s an Emergency Water Supply during hostilities.I think that Manzes Pie and Mash went the same night,as it was only two doors away....Bill Killick

Re: Southwark Park Road
I have borrowed the above image for a memory from 1960. At that time the area shown at "A" had become Robert Jones House between Linsey Street ("D") and Rouel Road ("B"). In 1960 the headmaster of Alma School which was in Alexis Street ("C") was Mr Murphy whose office was at "F". This office overlooked the area on the other side of Alexis Street which had been cleared of prefabs but was yet to become Robert McKenzie House ("E"). Mr Murphy obtained permission to clear the site for a cricket pitch and organised teams of pupils to move the detritus to the edges of the site and establish a flat area for cricket. The lead pupil on the project was the Red house captain, Barry Thurnell. During the clearance the exercise became known to the BBC who sent along a filming and reporting team to report on BBC Tonight a national TV programme fronted by Cliff Michelmore. Mr Murphy and Barry were interviewed and the project, along with Murphy and Barry, was seen on TVs in front rooms across the UK. The pitch only lasted one season (maybe two seasons, I'm not sure) as the flats were built very soon afterwards.
For those that remember Barry, he died on a trip to Prague and the report of his passing can be found here ... http://www.gloucestershirelive.co.uk/po ... story.html
