Like many of us l loved that slide there was something special about getting on a coconut mat at the top of the wooden slide with its enclosed top. It was so well designed and made by W J Dixon &Son of Blue Anchor Lane and donated
by Arthur Carr of Peak Frean were so many of my relatives worked.
All this is probably somwere else on this forum but l am a bit out of touch. I also heard that it had been vanderlised and set on fire.
What a great shame, l feel guilty these days of having left Bermondsey and not been around to try and help save so many of our great building and structures.

St James Church Mat Slide. Not a very clear picture but you can at least see the Coconut mat we used to sit on and who can forget that.

IT’S BACK. :D .
The new Bermondsey joy slide has been officially opened, a century after the original was built, and it’s certainly a hit with children playing on it.
The first joy slide in St James’s churchyard on Jamaica Road was commissioned by Arthur Carr, the owner of the nearby Peek Freans biscuit factory. The new slide was designed for free by Fergus Carr, the architect great-great-grandson of the factory owner. June 2021.
