Great photo's Ian - past and present. It really is one of Bermondsey's landmarks and an architectural gem.

I just wish the recent 'regeneration' development could have paid the church and it's grounds a bit more respect and not hemmed it in so much. I've said it before, but whoever allowed that green box on top of the block in St James Road (in your last picture) should be shot.

What is that green box exactly? It's awful! Probably the same person who allowed the slide to be removed? You can't really see St. James's Church from St. James's Road anymore!

After reading about the Joy Slide, i started looking around on the www. and found this quote from a Brenda Durnell.

Together with reading the Posts from Freddie and Bemondseybeat, this may be a very sad ending to the Joy Slide, Like many i was hoping for a fairytale ending, hoping it was put into storage and one day would be resurrected to it's former glory.

Brenda Joyce Durnell Thats may have been ths second slid, the first one got burnt down by kids and then the park had it rebuild but sadly it was again destroyed by another fire and then the church said it would cost to much to have it rebuild again, and that was down to kids again. How sad

I'm sure Ianmartin will get confirmation of what really happened, but it does look ominious

Steve.

So, nothing left at all then? That is very disappointing....Freddie had warned us to be fair....do you remember when this happened? I would be kind of respectful to give it a date? 1921-19??

Well, thanks for the info anyway, you're a sight quicker than the council!!

Am I surprised? Not!

All the best

I think they've let things slide - it's a slippery slope.
