Bartholomew Street

Formerly known as Carter Street, Bartholomew Street runs between New Kent Road and Great Dover Street.
Picture 1 shows the Beehive Public House on the corner of Deverell Street, the northern end of the street suffered severe bomb damage during 1940, the pub being hit many times on 29 September and again on the 29 October, but still opened and was later rebuilt.
Past the pub there was severe damage and another pub which stood on the far end of Bartholomew Street at the junction with Great Dover Street was destroyed, as were many houses. I am unaware what this pub was called? The houses on the rght in the picture were later removed and the whole of the right side of this street become part of the School.

Picture 2 shows the bomb damage that took place at the far end

Following on from earlier 1940s pictures, middle left is the "Beehive" pub, which I think my still be there. Later it was called the Spit & Sawdust
but not sure if this was just a nickname. Also Joe I think this may have been called Warner Street before changing to Bartholmew Street? not Carter Street but it could have been that before Warner Street.

The address was 17 Warner Street in 1869 and earlier, prior to street renumbering. Warner Street was renamed Bartholomew Street. The Beehive was hit twice in separate air-raids during WW2 and at least eight people were killed, it was reopened and later rebuilt. The pub on the corner with Great Dover Street, I think it was called The Virginia Plant, it was destroyed by a V2 rocket in December 1944.
Now believe the pub on the corner was The Black Bull originally called the Bull Inn. The Virginia Plant was at 82 Great Dover Street.
