Ilderton Road (well Canterbury Road, at the time). Charabanc outing from The Little Wonder pub. X..pngIlderton Road formally Canterbury Road. School on the corner of Hornshay Street and Corpus Christie church distant left. X..jpg
Hi Ray,
Great find, the pictures of Canterbury / Ilderton Rd… I’ve never seen any photos of the stretch between Manor Grove and Hornshay Street.
My granddad was partial to the odd pint in the Little Wonder!
Sadly, mum passed away in November… she used to like seeing photos of the area in and around Ilderton Road.
She was the last of our family who could remember a time when that area was very different.

Hi Brian, sorry to hear about your mum, yes, she filled in a few gaps of information for me at times. When I found the picture above of The Little Wonder Pub it made me think of your mum, especially that time she dragged your granddad out of the pub one Christmas. RIP little lady.
Ilderton Road, Old Kent Road behind. The empty space on the left was where the Little Wonder pub was. c1960. The café that me and your mum talked about Brian was down on the right, in fact that could be my Ford Escort van parked near it.?

Hi Ray,
The houses and shops on the right hand side of the photo are exactly how I remember them as a young kid… I remember the barbers, the cafe and the fish and chips shop; my uncle John’s best friend, Peter Murphy, lived in one of the old terrace houses on the far right hand side of the photo.
However, the left hand side of the image is completely alien to me!
My earliest memories of that side are of the Tustin estate being built. Those houses would make way for a grassed area with the long maisonette block, Heversham house, being built on the other side of the green.
Ironically, from my nan’s flat up on the 4th floor, you would have looked directly down onto the Little Wonder pub!
The houses on the right were demolished in the early to mid seventies.
The entrance to the Old Den remained, as well as the petrol station and the small ambulance station.

The crossing picture is probably the early to mid-50s. Thanks to Brian ( briancreasey44) for that information.

Hi Ray,
I couldn’t believe it when I see the picture that was taken outside Ilderton Road school... the lady with the pram is my nan!
We’re fairly certain that the little blonde girt next to her is my mum and that the boy in the pram is my uncle, both have recently passed away.
The slight uncertainty is that as far as we know, mum went to Canterbury Road school, so not sure why they would be outside Ilderton Road school?
If it’s definitely my mum and uncle in the photo, then it would have been taken in the early to mid 50s rather than 1960.
Amazing find... thanks Ray.

Hi Brian, nice to hear that it could be some of your family waiting to cross the road in the picture above, it makes it all worthwhile.

Hi Ray,
Having consulted with my sisters, we are now certain that the image does show our Nan, Mum and Uncle.
Mum did go to Ilderton primary school... she attended Canterbury road school later when it was part of Collingwood school.
Judging by the age of my uncle in the pram, we think the picture was taken around 1953-54.
Thanks for sharing.

Shame the original building as gone. Still, they have left the Coach Parking sign there.
