I found this photo of Dickens Square (off Harper Road - near the Borough) from 1964. Reminds me of a grander version of Thorburn Square - how could they have demolished these lovely looking houses?

I agree whole heartedly with what you say about iconic buildings - in fact the planners of today are completing a job the Germans could not finish during the war years - and in some cases its just like pulling down The Royal Crecent in Bath.
If you look at the continental reconstruction, especialy in Germany after the war many of the new buildings are in the same style as previously, but of course with modern interiors. We seem to build what in my opinion are eyesores, such as the Gherkin ( or suppository as I call it ) which blots the skyline of London along with other buildings.
But it all goes back further than this. The destruction of the Paragon and Crescent (designed by Michael Serales 1750-1813 in New Kent Road in the early 1900s) to make way for Paragon School, was an example of willful destruction of iconic buiildings by the then London County Council. A fine example of his work, similar to those built in New Kent Road, can still be see at The Paragon Blackheath which are now listed buildings

I think the town planners of the 50s and 60s did a far worse job than the Luftwaffe. To use one example think of the Bricklayers Arms junction. A flyover that, for as long as I can remember, moved the traffic jam from that junction to East Streer going out of town and in the other direction the jam lasted from the Elephant right back to the flyover. No wonder people moved out of these areas, Neighbourhoods destroyed, streets and streets of terrace housing that could, and should, have been refurbished demolished to make way for planning monstosities like the Aylesbury and Heygate estates and smaller schemes scattered throughout South London. Many of the buildings that were demolished would have been listed and appreciated for their scale and harmony with the surrounding buildings and streets. The plan below show how much was demolished to make way for the flyover.
