CLINK ST 2.jpg
A sailing barge moored in Greenmoor Wharf, Bankside.
This was the site of Southwark Corporation's rubbish depot. Refuse,
transported by horse and cart, was loaded into these barges by chutes and
hydraulic cranes. Once the boat was laden, the skipper and mate would head
downriver to the estuary. 1920-1933

BANKSIDE 5.jpg
Old houses in Bankside, Southwark 1940. Because it once lay outside the City of London's authority the area became occupied by the bear baiting pits and playhouses as early as the mid-16th century
