South Bermondsey Club and Institute

This one is another mystery picture. Has anyone any idea where this building was?

Looks like a school to the right of the picture

Hi fosney

Haven't found anything definite, but looking at the 1936/1952 mix map on Southwark website it shows a double fronted house on the north side of Rotherhithe New Road opposite Warndon Street. If you look to the north-east of this building there is the Rotherhithe New School (boys, girls & infants) in Suffolk Grove. The angles and all the positions all seem to match.

Regards
freddie

Thanks freddie for the help on that one.
I would agree with you that this building stood on the corner of Rotherhithe New Road and Suffolk Grove which has now gone opposite Warnden Street
In todays picture we see that the school has now been sited in Rorherhither New Road

Numbers 226 to 232 Rotherhithe New Road were built
c.1870 at the time when Rotherhithe was expanding.
They were entirely typical of a south London working-class terrace.
The site has been redeveloped as the Rennie Estate.

Rotherhithe New Road (continuing to the right) in 1963, Left is Hawkstone road. The tower block is the Hawkstone Estate, completed in 1963. I have been in this estate with someone who lived there and worked at the Bricklayers Arms Depot, (like me) but cannot remember their names.
