Hi Fosney
I was looking at your map showing the Rotherhithe New Road school access by Suffolk Grove. That’s the school I went to very briefly around 1950. It’s a pity there’s no pictures of it.
I’ve been posting on Catlin Street cos I was brought up in one of the prefabs – no. 4 to be exact. It was suggested I come here cos my dad, Bill, owned the Cain Hill Café at 216 Rotherhithe New Road. He handed it over to Fred Overall and his so Brian in the mid 50’s. Prior to the transport café, dad had a coffee stall from about 1947.
The picture is about 1945/46 I reckon. The arch doorway to the right was later to be the entrance to the café (we called it the canteen). The map shows the café in green. 214 RNR was William Harbrow Ltd and diagonally opposite was the BRS depot.
All the best - Chic
