A map of Great Maze Court and the surrounding area. Notice the little unamed alleyway that runs northwards into Maze Pond

Interestingly, I have references to my Ancestors the GELLARDS living in Great Maze Court and Little Maze Court could little maze court possibly be the unnamed alley you mention running north into Maze Pond? My Ancestor Joseph Gellard was a wire weaver and gives his address as 16-19 Great Maze Court possibly a shop or workshop? Do you know how many houses were in Maze Court? best regards, Chris

Hi Chris, welcome to the site. If you look at the map above, Little Maze Court was between Great Maze Court and Maze Pond, the little white strip coming out opposite Stainer Street, formerly Dean Street, pre 1912. As the posts are not mine my best guess on the date would be the late 1930s, only during WW11 this area was seriously damaged, and these streets may have disappeared at that time?
Looking at the picture above, Great Maze Court was possibly looking towards Maze Yard with the Hop Warehouse beyond, all now the Guy’s Hospital Complex.
If you go to the Guy’s Hospital Topic and my first post there, look at the picture on the right. I believe all that devastation to the left was in the direction of Little Maze Court, Great Maze Court and Maze Pond.

Hello Kiwi, Thank you so much for your help. It does look like it was a very poor and deprived area in the 1820s when my Ancestors lived there. My 4 x Great Grandfather Joseph Gellard was a weaver and lived between Bermondsey and Paris, France. Which makes me think how could someone from Bermondsey have connections in France, Unless he was descended from the Huguenots many of which were weavers. Once aain, Thank you for the information, kind regards, Chris
