Jacob's Island was rightly dubbed "The Venice of Drains", "The Capital of Cholera" and "The Jessore of England". Children died young from water-borne and contagious diseases, it was never free of fever. (“Jessore the city in India where Asiatic Cholera first emerged in 1817”).
The water is covered with a scum almost like a cobweb, and prismatic with grease. In it float large masses of green rotting weed, and against the posts of the bridges are swollen carcasses of dead animals,
In 1849, deaths which, within the last three months, have arisen from cholera, 6,500 have occurred on the southern shores of the Thames, it is not saying they all died on Jacobs Island but sadly a good many would have.
This is Jacob Island today 2016 a far cry from what it was in the 1800s.
Jacob's Island is a residential development in London, SE1 consisting of Providence Square, Providence Tower and Springalls Wharf, on the south bank of the River Thames, not far from Tower Bridge, Shad Thames, and Butlers Wharf.
Mill Street, Bermondsey Wall West, Jacob Street and George Row are the streets bordering the development.
