Todays picture A Mystery
A picture of what I believe is again the Dockhead area or Abbey Street / Jamaica Road.
As child after the war wandering around the ruins of Bermondsey I recall the building centre right a three storey building with a cage on the top in which I suppose games were played.
Can anyone recall this building or tell us where it was
Dockhead

Todays picture A Mystery
Hi,
Would it be the Fisher Boys club, I remember going to the club during the 1970s and playing football on the roof of a building with a cage roof on top.
I'm only guessing as I was only ten at the time

It's Dockhead House - opened in 1931. There's a good description of it in the Story of Time & Talents by Marjorie Daunt. I'll try and scan some pictures and information to post on here.

As promised, some photo's of Dockhead House from the Story of Time & Talents by Marjorie Daunt - my Dad had a copy from 1989, but I presume its long out of print. According to the book, Dockhead House was demolished in 1957.

Some more old photos of Dockhead for a then and now comparison. These ones come from the Holy Trinity Church's Bicentenary Year Book for 1973. There's also some interesting group photo's included that I'll post under the Bermondsey People thread.

The shops have long gone replaced by flats but the flats seen in the original picture still remain behind the trees
