Lower Road

Looking across Lower Road from the pub whch is now a Chinese Restaurant ( what was the name of the pub please ). Across the road used to be the Bermondsey Borough Council works site next to the car lot which as I remember it used to sell old Post Office telephone vehicles. The old gents toilet can still be seen, those were the days when we had public toilets. Bogarts double can be seen advertising Campari. The concrete wall of the Station yard can be seen in the background which still remains to this day
In todays picture it looks as though the first house has gone along with the car lot and replaced by modern buildings

Lower Road

All Saints Church, stood in Lower Road (no picture available) but engraving from 1840.
The Church was destroyed by a flying bomb on 13 August 1944.
The site of the Church Vicarage and Graveyard is now part of King George's Fields in Lower Road.
The Church stood opposite St Olave's Infirmary and next to the Main Entrance to Surrey Docks in Lower Road, now Surrey Quays.

Another picture of Surrey Docks Station as it was known looks like it was the 1960s when you could park you car in the road without getting a ticket and get your car parts in the corner shop

Lower Road

Remaining in Lower Road outside number 144 about the same period in time the 1960s.

The buildings have now been made tidy and improvements made to the roofs.

But today you have to pay to park your car

Lower Road

Another view looking across Lower Road to Cope Street with Broomfields Bakers on the corner another name from the past. On the corner now is another Fast Food outlet so much has changed, but those were the days when you still park for free in Lower Road.

Here's some more photo's of Lower Road from a Stephen Humphrey book.

I think the earliest one has been posted before, but this sequence shows the considerable war damage. However, it also demonstrates how much actually survived. Perhaps another challenge for Fosney to find a contemporary view.

Lower Road

Molins Machine Company had its beginnings in Cuba, Jose S Molins began making cigars and hand rolling cigarettes in 1874.

The Molins Machine Company was founded in the UK in 1912 and the first cigarette making machine was patented in 1928.

During WWII the Company focused on armaments, today Molins retains major positions in packaging machinery, tobacco machinery and scientific services, and is now based in Milton Keynes.

Before Molins occupied the site we can see from the old map that the area consisted of houses, a foundary, a leather and cotton belt works, and a depot for the Southwark and Deptford Horse Tramway. Also housed on the site were the Trams and the Horses.

I am sure that further information will evolve from other forum members who worked at Molins.
