Albion Street with the steps leading down to the tunnel. I remember using these, my mothers side of the family lived in Swan Buildings on the other side of the tunnel.
The picture was taken in 1956, when you consider how badly bombed and beaten up this area was and how lovely it still looked, it makes you wonder about what's going on now

Albion Street
Albion Street with the junction with Swan Road
It would seem that the houses in the distance in Canon Beck Road still remain as does the pub on the corner which I think was the Lord Nelson.
But is the pub still open can someone please tell us

Albion Street
Hi Fosney,
I can't thank you enough for the photos of Albion St with Swan Rd. I grew up in Beech House which is adjacent left to the pub in your second photo. I always wondered what the area looked like before the war.The shop and buildings in the first photo are now the site of Larch House. This area took a fearful hammering from Luftwaffe bombs in the war being so close to the docks, Albion dock in particular. The flats were built on bombsites after the war.
The last time I drove past "The Lord Nelson" it appeared to be closed-up.

My wife lived above Hales greengrocers and fishmongers at 8/10 Albion Street opposite the top of Rotherhithe Tunnel before it was demolished. The two photos appear to have been taken just prior to the "road improvements" judging by the cars and vans. She later moved to Risdon House above the new Hales. Her father Bert worked in the shop for about 60 years less about 5 years war service.
