HOP EXCHANGE, SOUTHWARK STREET.

Postby kiwi » Fri Feb 17, 2017 10:50 pm

The Hop Exchange. 24, Southwark Street, Bermondsey, SE1. 1866, 39 bays. Elaborate iron gates with decoration of hop plants in entrance openings. Parapet above has recessed corbelled section above each arch.” It was also badly damaged by a fire in 1920, losing its top two attic storeys. Now, with a lower roof, it has been restored and converted to office and event space. From the outside, only the architectural sculpture and ironwork motifs at the entrance serve as reminders of its original purpose. This really is a great looking building.
Though it was mainly for Hops it was also used to store & bottled Wine for J Lyons, in what they called the Hop Cellars situated beneath the Hop Exchange, covering an underground area of nearly one acre. Although J Lyons had used the extensive cellars from 1903 until 1972 for its Wine (when the stock was moved to Greenford) they did not own the Hop Exchange until 1944 when they bought the entire freehold.

No expense was spared on this building but saying that it is a smashing looking building that has stood the test of time.
