Long Lane

Todays picture reveals the change that has taken place over recent years. All traces of the Maxwell Laundry have now disappeared and it is now history. Only these photographs have recorded it, but the two buildings on the far right still remain. Long gone are the days when people would be seen leaving the shop with their Bagwash (including little boys while their Mum was at work).

St Christophers House --Long Lane

Constructed around 1880 it has a fine example of brickwork for the period.
The History is rather vague but as I understand it was used as a hostel for Guys Hospital and as a multi storey stable for Samuel Taylor Bonded Carmen of Long Lane with ramps for the horses to ascend
( the rear of the building I suppose ) Anyone got any further information?

A view of Long Lane from the early 1930s. We can see St Hughs church in Crosby Row in the distance but virtually nothing else. You can just make out the turning into Balin Place (by the sign) that was demolished for the Balin House flats.

Pickfords Goods Yard

In the area now occupied by The Empire Square Complex was Pickford's Goods Yard - a large and extensive depot that covered an area from Tabard Street to Long Lane the main entrance being in Long lane - no doubt in its day an employer of many men in the area while the yard seemed to dominated the area.

In this old picture we can see the entrance to Pickfords Yard on the left.
Many of us are unaware that the goods yard existed but it is shown on the maps for 1872,1894,1914 and as late as the 1936 to 1952 maps of the area
