The first recorded use of the name "Elephant and Castle" was in 1765. It referred to the pub, once a blacksmiths, that over time lent its name to the entire area. It was an important staging post for travelers situated at the junction of several major roads heading out of the city into Sussex and Kent, which were greatly expanded during the late 18th century.
