Listening To Radio 3 the other day I was pleased to hear the Trocadero at the Elephant and Casle mentioned, not something you expect to hear on Radio 3.
The topic was the Mighty Wurlitzer. After the Vandals went to work again and pulled down the old Cinema the organ went to South Bank University, It has now found a more suitable home. Fully restored
and instaled The Troxy Cinema Comercial Road. I think this would be well worth a visit.
I have some memories of hearing Cinema Organs but nothing specific. Do any of you remember hearing them.
Rod.

Hi Rod, I can remember the Trocadero Wurlitzer, mainly played by William Arthur Davies (25th Jun 1921- 2nd March 2006). He also played at various cinemas including, in 1960, the first organ broadcast in stereo, from the Trocadero at Elephant & Castle. I can also remember hearing an Organ in the Astoria Old Kent Road, especially on Saturday mornings.” You come along on Saturday mornings”

Thanks to crosby34 for the aerial view of the Bricklayers Arms area - so lets stay in this area again.
On the lower left of the picture we can see the Paragon School and to the north side of New Kent Road the then Girls Grammar School.
In the late 1800s in this area stood the Paragon to the south side of New Kent Road and to the north side Union Crescent.
Micheal Searles the architect for the development lived in the first house of the Paragon and his name is commemorated with the nearby Searles Road named after him.
The whole lot was demolished in the early 1900s to make way for the Paragon School and the Girls Grammar School.
Paragon School closed in the 1980s and is now a residential development while the Cirls Grammar School is now the C of E School of St Saviours and St Olaves.
The old gates of the Paragon stood for many years in New Kent Road but were lost with the development of the flyove

Another old building that has been lost for ever is St Andrews Church New Kent Road which stood on the site now occupied by the BP Service Station.
Made redundant by the Church of England in the 1950s it became South London Camping Warehouse untill being destroyed by fire and replaced by the Service Station all that remains is the old Vicarage

Seeing the picture of the ABC (Coronet) Cinema, Elephant & Castle, reminds me of the first time I took my then girlfriend to the pictures (1959).
Talk about making a good impression it was a complete disaster. Flash suit, tie and all the rest of it, talk about “jack the lad”. Half way through the film at The ABC (Coronet) Elephant & Castle, it’s going really good, ice cream, peanuts; I guess I'm the last of the big spenders.
Then all hell breaks loose, through one of the exit doors a crowd of yobs, letting off fireworks then a fire extinguisher causing havoc, then out through the other exit, but before that the lights come on and in passing by me and the girlfriend, their shouting out how yer going Ray. Well there’s only so far you can slide down a seat before you fall off, then the manager spots me sitting there, recognises me because we had done the same thing many times before and he chucks me and the girlfriend (now wife) out. You can imagine how I felt, so much for the good impression but it worked out all right we are still together. It was probable the first time I had paid to get into the pictures and we got chuck out, sods law I suppose.

Briefly opened during the Olympics (July/August 2012) as the pop up JJ Korean Restaurant and Bar but has remained shut since October 2012. At least the Fish Bar brightens it up.
