Re: Grange Road Swimmers
As kids going swimming on a Saturday morning was so much fun, not only did we get out of our parents hair for the day we also got a weekly wash at the same time! I remember on one occasion when we were told to get out of the pool we would always take our time or hide in the pool at the deep end and basically be a nuisance to the pool attendants.
Oh what fun we had in that pool.
However, this time when we were playing up by running away I was a bit too slow as the attendant (who was german, and I believe he may have been a POW from WWII) grabbed me from behind but as I had just got out of the pool and was still wet his grip on me slipped and he unintentionally scratched my back with his fingernails and boy did that hurt! To this day when I look in the mirror I can still make out the faint marks on my back! Another wheeze we did was to sneak into the girls changing cubicles, as they were on the right hand side of the pool and boys on the left, scare the girls and then leg it!Oh what fun we had in that pool.

Re: Grange Road
What a great photo! I recall on many occasions me and my mates would spend most of the day in that derelict pub just mucking about and if memory serves me this was also the entrance to the Spa Park too where I got bashed in the face by my brother on the swing one day and had to walk all the way to Guys A&E with my mum and blood pouring from my mouth! Would never have dreamed of calling for an ambulance in those days, seems we were a bit tougher then! Happy days

Re: Grange Road
Hi nuttyboy pat, like you the old Grange Swimming Pool brings back some memories of fun times and as you say going swimming gave us a wash. At that time (mid to late 40s) most of the clothes I got where hand-me-downs, so the first swimming trunks I got where about two sizes to big with a string to tighten them up with, so every time I jump or dived in they landed round my ankles. Still I was happy to have them and as they say beggars can’t be choosers, happy days.
Re: Grange Road
The public baths on Grange Road in Bermondsey opened in 1927 and were a very grand affair designed in ornate fashion to enable the poor of the borough to wash. While the baths performed their public function very well, the Turkish baths and Russian steam room in the basement also took on another role.

Re: Grange Road
Bacon’s School was the oldest school in Bermondsey. Founded in 1703 or 1718 with money left by Josiah Bacon, it used to be in Grange Road, where Southwark Institute of Adult Education now stands, but then moved to Pages Walk and Delaford Road. At first it was intended for 40-60 boys, but nearly over 100 boys and girls attended the college. It moved in 1990, funded by the LDDC, to a site in Timber Pond Road, close to Stave Hill Park, in a brand new building in the Surrey Docks. It is now known as Bacon’s College and is a Church of England sponsored City Technology College, an independent day school and community college admitting students of all abilities.
Re: Grange Road
Just a bit of information on this part of Grange Road, is that along on this side stood the Grand Cinema 202 Grange Rd., Bermondsey, Proprietors, Green & Latchman
The Grand Cinema opened in 1914 with 650 seats. It was operated by the Grand Central Company. In the 1930’s, the seating capacity had been reduced to 500 and it was running pictures and variety.
The Grand Cinema struggled through the heavy bombing that the area endured during World War II but closed around the end of 1945.

Re: Grange Road
Not sure of this but I think this could have been at the junction of Dunton Road, then called The Grange Road and Southwark Park Road, then called Blue Anchor Road.??
