As kids going swimming on a Saturday morning was so much fun, not only did we get out of our parents hair for the day we also got a weekly wash at the same time! I remember on one occasion when we were told to get out of the pool we would always take our time or hide in the pool at the deep end and basically be a nuisance to the pool attendants.

However, this time when we were playing up by running away I was a bit too slow as the attendant (who was a german, POW from the WW2 maybe?) grabbed me from behind but as I had just got out of the pool and was still wet his grip on me slipped and he unintentionally scratched my back with his fingernails and boy did that hurt! To this day when I look in the mirror I can still make out the faint marks on my back! Another wheeze we did was to sneak into the girls changing cubicles, as they were on the right hand side of the pool and boys on the left, scare the girls and then leg it!
Oh what fun we had in that pool.

What a great photo! I recall on many occasions me and my mates would spend most of the day in that derelict pub just mucking about and if memory serves me this was also the entrance to the Spa Park too where I got bashed in the face by my brother on the swing one day and had to walk all the way to Guys A&E with my mum and blood pouring from my mouth! Would never have of dreamed of calling for an ambulance in those days, seems we were a bit tougher then! Happy days :) :) :)

Hi nuttyboy pat, like you the old Grange Swimming Pool brings back some memories of fun times and as you say going swimming gave us a wash. At that time (mid to late 40s) most of the clothes I got where hand-me-downs, so the first swimming trunks I got where about two sizes to big with a string to tighten them up with, so every time I jump or dived in they landed round my ankles. Still I was happy to have them and as they say beggars can’t be choosers, happy days. :D
