Tower Bridge Road

Postby fosney » Mon Feb 06, 2017 9:53 am

(Yesterday & Today

Tower Bridge Road - Haddon Hall Baptist Church
Haddon Hall Baptist Church stood between Rephidim Street and Noel Street on the north west side of Tower Bridge Road.
South London, being the poorer part of the capital, has always drawn its fair share of Evangelists to the area and none more so than Charles Haddon Spurgeon 1834-1892, who was born in Kelvedon, Essex. He started his preaching at a very young age and at 19 became pastor at New Park Street Chapel, Southwark and is still known as a "Prince of Preachers", it is said that in his lifetime he preached to more than 10 million people. In his early days in London he lived in Great Dover Street, and at 22, Spurgeon was the most popular preacher of the day.
Although there is no record of him preaching at this church, the fact that preachers were peripatetic, one would assume he had and that the church was named after him.
The new Haddon Hall Church now stands on the corner of Tower Bridge Road, and Leroy Street.

Grange Road,Bermondsey New Road right, before it changed to Tower Bridge Road.

Grange Road, 1900, before it changed to Tower bridge Road.

I now know this to be Grange Road c1900.
These buildings where on the corner of, then Bermondsey New Road (right) and Grange Road, Nos 5-7. 5. Abraham Burton’s toy dealership and number 7, the archway on the left gives access to David and Benjamin Gladding’s rug making works. The buildings from the archway to now Tower Bridge Road right were demolished for the re-alignment of the road, the archway is still there today.
