Canon Murnane Road

Fosney,

Could you do the honours again with a current view. This is Canon Murman Rd which doesn't exist anymore. It ran from Grange Rd to Alscot St parallel to Spa Road. It's all part of the park now. This view looks towards Grange rd

This is a post by Vossy53.
This is a view of Keyes Road (formerly Alfred Street) taken from almost outside the Town Hall in Spa Road. The park was created after the War because the other half of the street and also Canon Murnane Road (formerly Ernest street) had been bombed.

Originally Known as Ernest Street and later renamed Canon Murman Road it was the first turning on the left past Spa Road Heading towards Southwark Park Road. If my memory serves me right, by the bus stop which is still in situ, there was a building on the corner (possibly a bank), a newsagent sweet shop behind the bus stop, then a Tailoring shop and on the corner of Ernest St/ Canon Murman Road a Pub - Perhaps someone will tell us the name of the pub. Facing the bus stop was a row of small shops. On this corner was the pub

Now all gone

From Kelly's Post Office Directory of 1859 the pub was "New Tanners Arms" ran by Thomas Andrews. Although long before all of "our time", here's the entries for that row in 1859:

131 Royal Fort - John Nicholl
132 John Gate Seex - upholsterer
133 Hayter Thornton Reed
137 William Collins - ship owner
142 William Heath - builder
143 Hugh Cuolahan - surgeon
153 John Samuel Fisher
155 New Tanners Arms
156 Mrs Mary Davison - grocer
157 James Aldous & son - tailors
159 National Vaccine Establishment
159 Sterry & Sharpe - surgeons
