Two men at work in the retort house of the South Metropolitan Gas Company in Old Kent Road London, 29th August 1933.
The South Metropolitan Gas Works in 1833 which was supplied from the Thames by coal. The Coal was placed in lighters and transported to the works through the Surrey Canal, managed by the Livesey family, first the father and then by his son George Livesey, a local benefactor who founded The Livesey Institute which has now closed.

Resurrection House, 155 Old Kent Road, SE1.
In the early-18th century, the Rolls family of The Grange in nearby Bermondsey acquired a significant amount of land around Old Kent Road. The last significant remnant of their involvement is the detached White House between the Peabody Estate buildings, built by Searles in the 1790s. The original railings and ironwork survive in the current development at No. 155. The house was later occupied by Searles and became the management office of the Rolls family trust estates.
This is where you will now find Dynamic Gospel Ministries. This is one of many independent churches in the area, most of them apparently catering for the Nigerian Community.

- Old Kent Road, Waleran Buildings left. I had forgotten John Edgington, right, was there.

I'm sure we all remember going to East Lane on Sunday morning but who can remember George Carter's shop at the Old Kent Road end of East Street will this bring the memories flooding back?

George Carter and Sons emporiom with its famous clock where the hat was raised on the striking of the hour.
Makes one wonder what they done with the clock when the building was demolished

Sat morning pictures still remember the song.
"We come along on a saturday morning greeting everybody with a smile"
"We come along on a saturday morning knowing everything we do is worthwhile"
Then some fun stuff. Reality was it was havoc between black and white batman and cowboys & Indians
