Old Kent Road

Another view of the George Carter shop in Old Kent Road. We can see in this picture the full range of mens wear for sale in the window display

I think this is once again opposite Albany Road,? the small street being Humphrey Street, with what looks like another Bakers shop on the corner. The picture on Page 2 with the collapsed building is I think the same area but with different shops, owing to this being the 1900s a much earlier time.

Bricklayers Arms-Old Kent Road

Most of the pictures we see of the Bricklayers Arms are of the Pub that stood on the Right of Tower Bridge Road. Today we have a picture of what stood on the Great Dover Street side of the junction, the shops look as though they are having a demolition sale

Was the Canterbury Arms on the corner of Old Kent Road & Ilderton Road. As anyone got an older picture?

Old Kent Road-Briclayers Arms

Picture of the Bricklayers Arms - opposite the Bricklayers Arms Public House stood another Public House a Trumans pub named The Kings Arms.

The picture shows the dray delivering beer, to the left of the pub we have a partial sighting of The Old Kent Picture House.

Who remembers going to the pictures in this establishment or using this pub ?

Fosney, thanks for posting this picture of the Kings Arms. I think it was a much more popular pub than the Bricklayers Arms, especially for younger people in the early 1960's. This is the first picture of the pub that I've seen on this site, and any other site, so you've done a good job researching it.
I can remember going to the Old Kent cinema, many times.
My Mom was an usherette at the Trocette cinema and the Old Kent cinema for a short while in the 1950's. She never kept a job for long, as I think she got bored with the routine of things. She was also a street crossing guard (Lollipop Lady) for Web Street School, for kids to go across TBR. She did that job for some time in the early 1960's.

Hi fosney
I used to go to Saturday morning pictures at the Old Kent. When we came out we went straight round to Joyces for pie and mash, (yes Joyces for us, not Manzes). It was a perfect way for us kids to spend Saturday. I also used the Kings Arms a few times when I was courting.
Oh such fond memories of growing up in Bermondsey

Smashing picture of the Kings Arms Fosney, that is the first time I have seen a picture of it. Looking at the list the place to the right of the Kings Arms is a Restaurant, I would never have guessed that. I did think there was a sweet shop along there but it seems I was wrong, maybe I got it mixed up with the Toy Shop? Like some of the other members I remember going to the Old Kent Road cinema, drinking in both the pubs and getting a bag of crackling from the Fish & Chip shop (Old Joe’s).

Hi Pat (Patrick Long), re- your post Kings Arms. ” I think it was a much more popular pub than the Bricklayers Arms, especially for younger people in the early 1960's.” After all these years are you now telling me you were a MOD. :) ;)

Is this the next one on the list above. ?
