My grandfather worked at the gas works in the Old Kent Road. When he retired they gave him a lovely wooden clock. My Uncle Jerry also worked there. In the war he was exempt from the forces as he had to continue working for the gas board. When there were bombings he had to enter the surrounding houses to make sure they were safe from gas leaks. He also got bodies out of the houses too.
My mother also worked for the gas board at the beginning of the second world war. Women had to do the mens jobs as they were away fighting. She was a gas meter money collecter. She loved that. She rode a bike. Once when we went past the gas ometer she said I used to go up there to collect my wages. In my childish mind I thought she had to climb up the gas ometer and the money came along like in those shops with the cash boxes on the wire. She was talking about the offices there. I always laugh at that.

Hi Fosney (Joe) Re- the 1890 picture of Old Kent Road.
Strangely enough I posted the very same picture on the old site with the same question, unfortunately I never got the answer. My first thought was the same as you going on the pub, the Duke of Kent on the corner of Charlotte Street now Rowcross Street. Then I tried to remember all the pubs that had a sign on a post outside and could only remember one The Swan. Of course this would have been years after this photo was taken and the post could have disappeared by then so I’m none the wiser. So at the moment unless someone comes along with the answer I’ll stick with that. Kiwi ( Ray).

The Old Kent Road Baths 1906, by all accounts It even had a well designed Turkish bath in one of the departments.

These Turkish baths were the first to be built by a local authority in London and were not opened until 19 October 1905, many years after provincial authorities started installing them. There was cooling-room for fourteen bathers, three hot rooms, plunge pool and a range of baths and showers. The baths were used on alternate days by men and women.

Old Kent Road
I am sure that the John Edgington works in Old Kent Road was familiar to most of us.
Founded in 1805 the company manufactured a wide variety of product from tents ,flags, banners, Parpaulins and Ropes and durring the war shrouds for civilan dead.
In 1878 they entered into a contract with The Prison Commissioners to produce and supply hangmans ropes untill the last hanging in 1964.
The factory occupied a vast area in Old Kent Road and was built mostly of wood and was removed in 1967 to make way for the Bricklayers Arms Flyover

The Old Kent Road shop was removed in 1967 to make way for the Bricklayers Arms flyover. The original shop front can be seen at Woburn Abbey.

Fosney,
These might be difficult to get corresponding current views of, but I'm sure you love a big challenge. From the other end of the Old Kent Road (and straying into New Cross a little), these have just been posted on the Millwall fansite House of Fun by Gazza: -

1. Old Kent Road/ New Cross Road
2. The Den and Greyhound Track
3. New Cross Hospital. Circa 1969
