Postby fosney » Sat Feb 04, 2017 3:01 pm

The Dun Cow Old Kent Road Looking Towards Dunton Road 1950.
Who remembers what shops were on the corner I remember a Shoe repair Shop and an Opticians.
What are your memories of this corner?

Today's picture the pub is now a surgery and the site is now dominated by Tesco

Bricklayers Arms Old Kent Road

Postby fosney » Sun Feb 05, 2017 3:58 pm

(Yesterday & Today)
Bricklayers Arms looking into Tower Bridge Road.
On the right we can just see the end of the pub, and the building which the bus has stopped at belonged to Hartleys and I can remember it as the sugar warehouse.
Before that the building was occupied by John Bell, Hills and Lucas who made gas masks for the army during World War One and other medical products.
This area is unreconisable. During the war as a child I remember the ground floor being an air raid shelter
The vehicle to the left of the picture is a London Transport Tree Lobber for the overhanging branches

This is in the Old Kent Road, the shop on the left in white is called Walklyn Bakery on the corner of Humphrey Street opposite Albany Road. I would go into this Bakery when I work at the Bricklayers Arms Railway (1958)

This was near Leroy Street, more or less opposite the Deaf & Dumb School c 1950.

Co-op stamps, you got these for your grocery shopping and off the milkman, great sheets of them that you had to lick and stick in books, before handing them in to collect free things from your local Co-op...usually glasses.
