Doe's anyone remember the Astoria when it was like this :?: It didn't last long Mad Dog Bowl (Old Kent Rd 1978-1979). :o

Some added information about this area in 1856. Before the Astoria it was called Watts Terrace, with the street on the right called Caroline Street, now called Sandgate Street. On the other side of Caroline Street on the corner with Old Kent Road was The Horse and Groom Pub, 615 Old Kent Rd, the original address of this pub was 1 Grenada Place, Old Kent Road. In 1938 on that corner, it is recorded as a Candy Store. Could that be the shop in the picture?

Old Kent Road. This part of OKR was known as Sussex Place in the 1860s. Not sure of the date of the picture but with the trams possible the early 1900s? The road to the left at that time was called Bowles Road. Pub on the opposite side of the street to later years.

Regal Cinema,Old Kent Road 5 X.png

Just a bit of added information.
To the left of the Regal is Leo Street, which is still there 2020.
Leo Picture Palace later renamed the Leo Electric Cinema, was on the corner of Leo Street. It opened in 1912, had 121 seats using wooden benches and was an excellent early example of a shop converted into a cinema. It showed a 45-minute continuous programme for an entry fee of 1d (one old penny). lt closed in 1926 and became a furniture shop and remained as such until the late 1960s, when it was boarded up. The adjacent row of shops was demolished some years later.

Wellington Baths, Old Kent Road. This building was erected in 1905 at the Old Kent Road junction with Marlborough Grove. The baths had two swimming pools, slipper baths, Turkish baths, Russian vapour baths and a public wash house. The building was destroyed by bombing during WW2.
