The Royal Eye Hospital (Royal South London Ophthalmic Hospital) which was established in 1857 and the building in the picture was rebuilt in 1892. The building on the left is a Salvation Army shelter with a sign above the door advertising "BEDS". All the buildings in this picture were demolished in the mid-1990s to make way for McLaren House student accommodation block.

To the left of the fire station is Jackson’s Oyster Bar, which was established in 1856. An advert in the window tells us that they sold oysters from Whitstable in Kent. To the right is Waterloo train station. In 1954 the London Ambulance Service Headquarters moved into the building.

That cartoon cinema was the only pictures my dad would take us to, brilliant!!
