Abbey Street --Neckinger Mill
Neckinger Mills, originally the site of a paper mill where the development of the recycling and production of paper from straw and wood was developed by Matthias Koop and Elias Carpenter, using water from the Neckinger.
Following bankruptcy of Matthias Koop the site was taken over in 1806 by Bevington and Sons, who then began the processing of animal skins. The large site between Jamaica Road and Neckinger continued production until 1935 when the works moved to Dartford and the Neckinger Site was redeveloped by Bermondsey Borough Council for housing.
The Company left the site in 1980 when the warehouse was converted to "live work units". Now a Grade II listed building it is currently used as a mixed residential and commercial site.

Hi Joe once again I must ask where do you get your pics from their great. An aunt & Uncle of mine used to live in Monach Buildings in the early fifties, which was just across the road Bevingtons used to be able to see all the diffrent coloured dipping pools for the skins. Once again memories awkened.

Rick
Once again thanks for your positive comments its great to know that all this brings back memories to people.
Regarding the pictures its a long and sometimes endless journey trying to get old pictures for the forum but you just have to persevere till you achieve the goal.
The pictures of Koops mill came from a search for Koops Mill Abbey Street .
And the old pictures of Bevingtons came from a search of Neckinger Mills Abbey Street and by looking at each and every item which can take yonks! Its all on the internet?
Regards
Joe

Hello rstupple2,
I read with interest your post on Jan 2 2011.
In it you mentioned your uncle and aunt lived in Monarch Buildings. I wonder if you can tell me their surname and what number they lived in, because I used to live in No 41 for a while before moving to No 2. Mind you this was before the war around 1936 -39, so it is probably before your time.
The buildings used to be opposite the drillhall, where my brothers and I used to play with the caretaker's son Gilbert. In fact there is a picture of the old slums on my Druid Street Arch Bombing Topic.
My uncle Bill Day, his wife aunt Poll and children used to live above us. There were also a couple of girls that we played with, one was Mary Coveney and another was Alice Hussey, who strangely enough I sat next to on a Halifax - Dartmouth ferry here in Canada, about 25 years ago
As I have previously mentioned in earlier posts, I went to St. James's School, which was evacuated in 1939 and we all went to Brighton until May 1940 and then to Frimley near Aldershot, when Dunkirk fell.
It's amazing how vivid our memories are 75 years ago, but no one should ask me what I was doing last week.
All the best!

Thank you Rick and fosney for your replies regarding Monarch Buildings.
Yes, that is one part of the old buildings where I lived and you are right fosney, that is the pub on the corner of Jamaica Road and Abbey Street. Another pub was a little further up the street called the Star and Garter, that my father always frequented,.next to the picture house of the same name.
Rick, I don't remember anyone with the name Daniels, as you indicated they might have taken up residence after the war,
Fosney, it looks like that picture of the old slums. was taken just before they were torn down, probably in the '50's.
I must admit the modern replacement is a sight for sore eyes.

Closed by the trustees in 1867 the building was taken over by The London City Mission.
The site was redevoped in 2000/2001 by the LCM and still provides a base for missionarys

Hi Joe
thank you for posting the pic of the Bermondsey Gospel Mission.
I used to go to the mission in the 1960's when I was a kid.
I, and several of my friends, attended a group called The Band Of Hope which was a temperance
group to teach us Bermondsey kids the right and wrongs in life and was held once a week on a week night.
I remember it vividly, even the words GOD IS LOVE looking down as we went up the stairs to the entrance.
Each evening began with us singing hymns accompanied by a woman up on the stage wearing a hat
and playing the piano.
After the hymn singing we would be taught all sorts of useful things and one of the things I remember is being taught how to use a telephone and call the emergency services.
Does anyone else remember the Band Of Hope and did anyone else attend it?
Lesley
You can take the girl out of Bermondsey but you can't take Bermondsey out of the girl!
