Alscot Road

Postby fosney » Fri Feb 24, 2017 11:50 am

My mate used to live in Keyse Rd. We came up with this idea whereby one of us would stand on a chair in the cellar looking up through a hole in the coalhole cover - then the other one would stop any passing woman to ask directions so we could get a glimps up her skirt (this never worked)

I remember one of the shops in Alscot Rd called Smith's where we bought sweets & was one of the few shops open on a Sunday - does anyone remember which things you could buy & which were illegal to buy on a Sunday?
Next door was a greengrocer and on the corner was a haberdashers

Alscot Road

We end the year with a picture of the north end of Alscot Road the Prince Alfred Public House in the foreground. All the houses and pub have now gone but the houses seen in the picture backed on to the rear of the Glue Factory and part of which can be seen at the end of the Cul dr Sac. To the left of the picture was Alscot Road proper which led to Spa Road the Library and Town Hall

South end of Alscot Road looking north. I can’t make out the name of the street running across but think it is Setchell Road & we are looking towards Grange Road??

I can remember the pub on the corner with Willow Walk, which would be where the picture was taken from, Alscot Road right. In earlier years the address was given as Willow Walk.

If you look at the map posted by Fosney, (above second post). Just follow the arrow and you will see the Tannery at the end of Alscot Rd on the right.
