Floating a billiard bed at Dinorwic Slate Wharf, Rotherhithe. Slate splitting is an art acquired by long practice. It is an unusual Thames-side occupation, although Welsh quarries employ many skilled men. Five slate slabs are joined together to form one bed. They are rubbed down flat with floats - metal boxes filled with sand and water. 11th February 1928.
