Surrey Commercial Docks, Rotherhithe.
The deal porters were a specialist group of worker’s in London’s docks, most of the deal porters worked in Surrey Commercial Docks, Rotherhithe, which specialised in timber.
They handled baulks of softwood or "deal", stacking them up to 60 feet (18 m) high in quayside warehouses They were eventually rendered obsolete by the 1940s as mechanisation provided a better and cheaper way of moving timber cargo, and less arduous jobs became available elsewhere.

Mills and Knight managed the dock from 1890 to 1960 and dealt solely in repairs, in particular for the General Steam Navigation Co based in Deptford. RYE-ARC acquired the yard in 1960, but despite plans for modernisation, ceased trading in 1968 when it was clear there was no further future for ship repairs in Rotherhithe.

Hope Sufferance Wharf and Granary, Rotherhithe village, 1850 - 2014
There are three buildings that make up the Hope Wharf enterprise: one with a Thames frontage, and two others facing onto St Mary Rotherhithe Street, which changed function over time but were originally storage and stables.

This is a message from a Mr Harry Pocock. Though adjusted I feel that his story is worth posting, to me it gives life to the picture and a little bit of history on Pocock’s in Rotherhithe also information.
My Great Grandfather, Henry Pocock kept The Jolly Waterman Pub as well as the Barge Builders and Dry Docks (Pococks) that were adjacent to it. My Grandfather, Percy Pocock, was a pilot on the Thames. I have a pewter pint pot here, inscribed H.Pocock, Jolly Waterman, Rotherhithe that my father, David Pocock, left to me in his will. My Father put my Grandfathers ashes into The River Thames, which would have been about 1966 or 7 and I did the same honour for my father nearly 30 years later.

Howland Great Wet Dock was working as early as 1697—It was later renamed Greenland Dock & Specialised in cargoes of timber. The Surreys closed 1970 & a period of dereliction preceded a rebirth as a series of new residential neighbourhoods with Greenland Dock retaining its waters for a variety of aquatic leisure pursuits.
