The shed was built in 1905 to serve the London County Council tram network. As this network extended, Camberwell became a hub for trams travelling northbound from south-east and south-west London, and the shed could accomodate up to 155 tramcars.

I would dearly love to see one of these double decker trams running again. When I was a lad in London I thought they were magic as they rumbled and screeched along with their antenna reaching up to the overhead power lines. Even today they strike me as having a scifi look to them. Oddly enough I do not remember riding on one. Bring'em back I say LOL

Hi Kiwi, thanks for this. Frankly I am amazed that you could figure out all of this from the precious little in the pic. Based on your info I found this and am guessing that it is the Fortune of War pub in question, especially in that the tram is a No. 72.

I did some checking and came up with this: This incident took place in the early hours of Thursday, 18th April 1946. The tram was a No.72 workmen's' service for early commuters. It wrecked the front of the Co-op Pharmacy at 75 Woolwich New Road and damaged the shop fronts either side. Four passengers, the driver and the conductor sustained injuries. Apparently it was caused by excessive speed going downhill. Go figure. I also found an even more dramatic pic of the accident.

I guess this was handy for the cleanup

July 4th 1952 , the day before the final tram ran in London and Car #186 is on the 38. This service was replaced by Route 177. Here on New Kent Road looking west. Elephant & Castle Railway Station just off to the left in Elephant Road.
