HALPINS TRANSPORT,TRANTON ROAD,BERMONDSEY.

Halpins Hauliers was run by Jim, John & Jean Halpin, they were second cousins of mine. The house in Tranton Road was damaged by Incendiary bombs during the Blitz & the Halpins bought it & built a new one on the site. There was a workshop at the back from Storks Road entrance where John & Cousin Joe worked on the Lorries, Jim & Jean also had the Beehive café in Jamaica Road, next to the Rising Sun Pub. The Haulage firm became Pierpointhalpin at a later date.

Joe Halpin, who lived at 32 Alexis Street, had a cooperage yard at 33/37 Linsey Street in the 1960s, and probably earlier. The yard was lost when the road was slum cleared in 1969. Joe was a jolly, rotund, elderly man with a striking nose. Lovely chap.
