Re: WESTON STREET.

Weston Street - late Baalzephon Street . When did it change? This detailed 1887 plan of London is one of a series of twenty-six sheets in an atlas originally produced to aid insurance companies in assessing fire risks. The building footprints, their use (commercial, residential, educational, etc.), ...

Re: Thurland Road

On the way out of the gents' toilet in Thurland Road there was a sign which confused me -- bear in mind I was only about six or seven at the time -- which read "Please adjust your dress before leaving". Surely the people wearing dresses were next door in the Ladies' toilet!

Re: The great pie & mash debate

Re: MONNOW ROAD.

That's got me questioning my photo. I've only recited what I've been told and I think I remember being at the party and I'm pretty certain that was in Monnow Road School. Bear in mind I was not yet 4 years old at the time. The thing is, why would the school have two parties for the same event and th...

Re: MONNOW ROAD.

At the coronation of the Queen in June 1953 Monnow Road School hosted a fancy dress coronation party for local kids. 10_03.jpg In this photo you can see me (jockey), my elder brother (Bill Ripper - not in fancy dress despite the size of his collar), my cousin Alan Curtis (wearing the fez - it also l...

Re: BERMONDSEY WALL EAST

I'd often wondered about that building. Thanks for the intro, kiwi. There's a fascinating page on the Duffield Sluice at https://www.ianvisits.co.uk/blog/2012/08/19/the-remains-of-duffields-sluice-in-bermondsey/

Re: Living in the Blitz

Kiwi - what was the point of the War Department Markers? I can see they carry the Ordnance Survey benchmark arrow which was used by OS surveyors until GPS became established but that benchmark had been taken from the army's ordnance department, where the OS started.
