Tram heading towards Rotherhithe Tunnel. I hope that’s the conductor sitting in the tram & not the driver, if not then the tram is on the wrong side of the road & that horse is going to have one hell of an headache.

Hi Paperboy, you were on the right track. They were used basically for ordnance survey use. They were positioned by the war department (or the Ministry of Defence as they are now known) and will have distances from each point to the boundary of their land.
